Youngest hopeful follows his family

The youngest candidate in the election is a Brunel University student who is following in his family's footsteps.

Matthew Barber, who graduates this year, is standing in Yiewsley ward for the Conservatives

Though his family home is in Faringdon, Oxfordshire, he has become so fond of Hillingdon during his student years he plans to stay here when he finishes his course - whether elected or not.

Mr Barber, who was 21 in February, said: "My family has always been very political, and I have studied politics and philosophy at Brunel.

"I joined the Conservative Brunel Society when I got to University, and became chairman.

"As the council elections loomed I hoped I would be able to stand as a candidate."

Mr Barber enjoys football and jazz, but for now is content to use his spare time to pound the streets and deliver leaflets.

He said: "I have been out every day, and it is quite promising.

"People seem largely concerned with environmental issues.

"I wondered if people would say I'm inexperienced, but I have found they seem to welcome the idea of new blood."

Mr Barber hopes eventually to work in public services or the media, but for now is happy to be in the news rather than making it.

Letter to the Uxbridge Gazette

Letter to the editor

Sir,

Whilst talking to members of the public in Yiewsley ward about the issues that matter to them in the run up to the Council Elections, one thing has been repeated to me on a number of occasions. This is the matter of their Labour councillor Paul Harmsworth, and their dissatisfaction with what he has, or rather has not done for the area during his term in office. He is seen by local people, to be part of the Labour group that has time and again blocked Conservative proposals intended to improve local facilities and the quality of life of residents.

This is not simply a matter of party politics, it is a matter of track record. The Conservative group have succeeded in so many areas over the past four years. However, these successes would have been much greater if the Conservative minority administration was not held back by the petty squabbling on the Labour benches. Paul Harmsworth is a prime example of this. He has shown no commitment to the people of Yiewsley, and I would not be surprised if we see him moving to another ward for the next election, while my colleague Cllr. Danny Banks (Con) holds firm to fight for the people of Yiewsley.

I hope to be joining him on Hillingdon Council, and along with Cllr. Robert Benson, we will form an effective team, as part of a Conservative controlled council that will be able to make real and meaningful improvement to the borough.

Stick to the local issues, please

Sir,

As a resident for Botwell I was dismayed by the actions of my ward councillor, Mr. Norman Nunn-Price, during the Council Meeting, which I attended on Thursday (24th January). At a time when Botwell is ranked in the 20% of most disadvantaged wards in the country, Terminal 5 threatens to have great impact on southern parts of Hillingdon, and environmental problems such as fly-tipping are on the increase, I would have expected my local representative to have been occupied by local issues.

Instead Mr. Nunn-Price seconded a motion that Hillingdon Council should condemn the appalling treatment of animals in South Korea. Much as I will join with him in condemning the torture of cats and dogs, I was not aware that the London Borough of Hillingdon extended as far as South Korea. I am sure that other residents of Botwell would agree with me that the time of our council would be much better spent upon issues that effect our daily lives in the borough.
