Swimmers in Abingdon will again be able to use the indoor pools at White Horse Leisure and Tennis Centre when they reopen from Monday 12 September.
The pools closed for ten weeks over the summer for essential maintenance. The work involved replacing tiles and grouting around the pool edges and repairs to the concrete which supports the surrounding area.
While the pools have been out of action the rest of the facilities at the leisure centre have remained open as usual and centre operators, GLL, put in place a full programme to ensure that all swimming lessons could take place as normal at the nearby Abbey Meadow Outdoor Pool.
The work was organised by Vale of the White Horse District Council and cost less than £400,000.
Over the coming months White Horse Leisure and Tennis Centre will also benefit from an additional £1.7 million investment. This includes a major extension to the existing gym area which is set to be completed in December 2016.
At the Abbey Meadow Outdoor Pool the summer season ends on Sunday 11 September and this will be the last chance people get to use the pool before the facility is closed for major improvement works.
Cllr Charlotte Dickson, Cabinet Member for Leisure at Vale of White Horse District Council, said: “It’s great that we’re going to have the much loved indoor pools open again. GLL have done a really good job over the summer putting on the full swimming programme at Abbey Meadow and we’re really grateful to the public for their patience over the ten week closure.”
Ben Whaymand, Partnership Manager GLL, said: “We would like to thank all of our customers for bearing with us while the essential maintenance work took place. We now look forward to welcoming people back to swimming at the White Horse Leisure and Tennis Centre.”
