Attempt to save Wantage Local Service Point rejected by Lib Dems

Wednesday, 17 February, 2010

At tonight's Vale of White Horse District Council meeting, efforts to save the Wantage Local Service Point (LSP) as well a bolster the Wantage Civic Hall were rejected by the Lib Dems. The Lib Dem Executive budget proposed closing the LSP, and important local facility, used by many in the West of the District after the closure of the Faringdon office. I proposed an amendment to the budget, that would have seen the LSP moved into Wantage Civic Hall. The future of the Civic Hall is also uncertain, so the move could strengthen both facilities as well as saving taxpayers money.Lib Dems defeated the amendment by only 3 votes insisting on voting through the original budget which not only means the closure of the LSP, but also increased parking charges, cutting more than £180,000 from the grants budget and putting up council tax by 3.9%!
