Bin chaos hits the Vale

Thursday, 7 October, 2010

I have been dealing with a number of problems reported to me in the first few days of the Lib Dem-Vale's new bin scheme. There are a number of people who have reported that their food bins were not collected, but their rubbish was. Quite a few people have still not collected their sacks, which have been left for collection in the main towns. On Monday the collection vehicle broke down in Faringdon causing some delay, but happily the crew caught up with the collections by the end of the day. These are what I would call small teething problems, which are annoying if they happen to you, but not the end of the world. More seriously I am aware of nearly 200 people who did not receive their bins by the end of last week. Attempts are being made to ensure they receive these before the first collection is due. Most will not receive them until the day before collection. Included in this number is South Hinksey, where the entire village seemed to have missed out on getting their bins delivered on time! I raised concerns about the delivery schedule over a month ago, and was told by the Lib Dem Councillor in charge that her eyes were" glued to every detail", and that "further resources will be put in place if required I am confident we will finish the roll out on time"! It would appear the resources were not adequate to get all of the bins delivered before the scheme began! The problems are not restricted to the delivery of the new bins however. Charney Bassett were due to have their rubbish collected yesterday, but no-one turned up! I understand that the collection is to be made today instead, but we will wait and see. Apparently further confusion has been caused in Charney Bassett because two different collection dates have been advertised. By doing a postcode search on the Council's website residents are told that their collection is due on Monday, yet the leaflet delivered to households with the new bins states Wednesday. I am assure that Wednesday is the correct collection day for Charney Bassett. It is not clear how widespread the errors on the website are, please refer to the leaflet delivered with your new bins. To restate I opposed the implementation of the new scheme, and although some problems were inevitable, they are still of a scale that I find worrying. It is not good to say that only a small percentage of households are effected, that is very little comfort if you are one of those households. I am passing all problems on to the Council, please do let me know if you have experienced any other issues yourself.
