The car park at Abingdon’s popular White Horse Leisure and Tennis Centre is set to increase in size this summer in a move designed to make more spaces available and make the area safer for its 700,000 plus visitors a year.
To increase the capacity of the car park, work will begin on Tuesday 26 August on a new 99 space overflow area, which will be located next to the skate park. This work will include new and improved access roads and associated landscaping, drainage, lighting and signage. A new cycleway and pedestrian crossing will also be built.
Once the new overflow area is open, a number of improvements will then also be made to the existing car park. This includes resurfacing work, improving the alignment and markings of parking bays, the creation of five additional disabled parking spaces and new signage.
Once both phases of the project are complete, the total number of car park spaces will have increased to 343. With the work being carried over two phases to reduce the impact on car park users It is expected to take just over two months to complete.
Cllr Elaine Ware, Cabinet Member for Economy, Leisure and Property at Vale of White Horse District Council, said: “The White Horse Leisure and Tennis Centre is an extremely popular facility; however, this has meant that the car park’s capacity is exceeded on a regular basis, which causes issues both on site and to adjacent roads. The lack of car parking has been a reoccurring theme of dissatisfaction for centre users, so I’m sure this increase in capacity will be a very welcome development.”
