On Wednesday 11 May the honorary Freedom of the Vale was awarded to the Abingdon based 3 Regiment RLC, 4 Regiment RLC and The Rifles. The award was made at a special meeting of Vale of White Horse District Council by Chairman Cllr Mike Badcock.
To mark this prestigious honour scrolls were presented to representatives from each of the regiments. The award for 3 Regiment RLC was presented to Commanding Officer Lt Col Corey Smalley. Acting Commanding Office Major Helen Cook received the Freedom of the Vale honour on behalf of 4 Regiment RLC. Both regiments are based at Dalton Barracks. The award to the Rifles was received by Colonel Simon Plummer MBE, Rifles Deputy Regional Colonel for Greater London & the Home Counties. Cllr Mike Badcock, Chairman of Vale of White Horse District Council, said: “I’m delighted that we have honoured the three regiments with the Freedom of the Vale. This recognises the vital contribution they make to life in the district, particularly around the Abingdon area, and the service they give to the country.” Colonel Paul Fish, Abingdon Station Commander, said: “I’m delighted that two of my Regiments have been bestowed with the Honorary Freedom of the Vale of White Horse. “3 Regiment The Royal Logistic Corps and 4 Regiment The Royal Logistic Corps have been based in Dalton Barracks since the Corps was formed in 1993. Abingdon Station and these units are extremely proud of the links and bonds that have been formed and maintained within the local community. The award of this Freedom further strengthens these ties and is a great honour. We all look forward to a parade through Abingdon later in 2016, to mark this occasion.”
