Wednesday, 5 August, 2009

Vale Conservatives have welcomed a deal between Faringdon Town Council andthe Vale of White Horse District Council that secures the future of the CornExchange as a community facility until at least 2012. At a signing ceremony at the end of July, the Vale transferred ownership ofFaringdon's Corn Exchange to the Town Council. Following long negotiationsthe Vale have agreed to continue to pay towards building work over the nextthree years to help secure the future of the building. In exchange the TownCouncil have guaranteed that it will continue as a community hall until2012. Town and District Councillor, Roger Cox, welcomed the deal saying, "It hastaken a lot of time and hard work to reach this agreement, and there hasbeen much uncertainty. The completion of this deal is great news forFaringdon. Cllr Matthew Barber, Conservative Leader on the Vale and also representing Faringdon added, "I am delighted that the facility is secured for thebenefit of the town. The Corn Exchange is an iconic building and its futureis important as our town expands. The Town Council have been running thehall for many years and it makes sense that they should own their ownpremises. I am also pleased that the Vale will continue to contribute to thecosts of the building by more than £20,000".
