Good sports at district councils hand over £4 million of facilities over to local community

A group of sports clubs from Didcot and the surrounding area is set to score a winning goal as the Vale of White Horse District Council hands it the reins for more than £4 million of sports facilities in Great Western Park.  Boundary Park Sports Association is made up of Didcot Cricket Club, Didcot Rugby Club, Harwell and Hendred Youth Football Club. The association is taking over the lease of both the sports pavilion and pitches, including four full size rugby and cricket pitches, four tennis courts, and six football pitches.  Didcot Cricket Club is moving to the new grounds from their current location on the site at Didcot A power station, which has been earmarked for redevelopment having received outline planning permission last week.  Both the pavilion and the pitches were secured by Vale of White Horse and South Oxfordshire District Councils as part of their ongoing commitment to help build a community in the area. The funding for the building and pitches was raised from developer contributions from Taylor Wimpey, who are building Great Western Park.  The pavilion was built by Claude Fenton (Construction) Limited who are based down the road in Theale, near Reading.  Now Great Western Park has grown over the district boundary, the pavilion and half the pitches are in the Vale, with the other half of the pitches in South Oxfordshire.  Councillor Mike Murray, cabinet member for regeneration and property at Vale of White Horse District Council, said: “This is a good example of how we work with developers to make places like Great Western Park more than just a collection of houses – communities need to be built from the ground up, which is why we want residents to run their own facilities like the sports pavilion and pitches.”  Councillor Rob Simister, cabinet member for property and economic development at South Oxfordshire District Council, said: “We’re giving people living on Great Western Park the chance to create their own community and run it in the way that works best for them.  “They’re currently arranging a big launch event for later this year, so keep an eye out for details.”  Paul Costello, chairman of the Boundary Park Sports Association, said: “Didcot Cricket Club, Didcot Rugby Club and Harwell and Hendred Youth Football Club are large community focussed clubs who had all outgrown their current facilities. Taylor Wimpey have provided pitches of the highest quality together with a modern, purpose built clubhouse and thanks to the trust the two district councils have shown in Boundary Park Sports Association, these three clubs now have a new ground to call home. BPSA has been working with the council on this project for several years now and we look forward to continuing that partnership in the future whilst working with the local residents as well to help make Boundary Park the heart of the community on Great Western Park.”
