Postpone new leisure centre say Lib Dems A new leisure centre, needed to deal with the increase in housing, should be postponed according to the Vale's Lib Dems. At tonight's Council meeting they put forward proposals to delay the scheme beyond 2019 which is the date proposed by the Council's Conservative Cabinet. The proposals also suggest recklessly risking £4m of your council tax on road projects. Conservatives are committed to delivering infrastructure as soon as possible and have made provision to 'front fund' major projects. This is when the Council pays for works up front and developers reimburse the costs later. Instead the Lib Dems have put forward plans that let the developers off the hook and presume that more than half of the public money would never be recovered! The Lib Dems proposals rely on spending more than £4.5m more than the Conservatives and they are doing so when nationally it is only the Conservatives who have suggested that the Council will get enough funding in the future. Cllr Matthew Barber, Leader of the Council, said: “We have set out a clear vision for the future of the Vale. We will tackle the difficult challenges ahead and manage your money wisely so that we can deal with an unpredictable future. By contrast we have seen proposals from the Opposition that show they would spend recklessly and leave taxpayers shortchanged without the infrastructure we all so desperately need".
