Lighting up the Vale

Thursday, 24 May, 2012

On Monday 4th June the Vale will be lit up with beacons celebrating the sixty year reign of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Britain from the air on the night should be a sight to behold as thousands of beacons are lit across the country from the Isle of Unst at the North of the Shetlands right down to Jersey in the English Channel. The official Vale of White Horse Beacon will be at Lockinge near the Lord Wantage Memorial. After the lighting at 10.15pm there will be a short fireworks display that should be visible from large parts of the district. According to the official Jubilee Beacons website (http://www.diamondjubileebeacons.co.uk) shows ten beacons in the Vale of White Horse alone, and I am aware of others in smaller villages. The first beacon will be lit at 10pm precisely with community beacons being lit across the country at 10.15pm. HM The Queen will light the final beacon in central London at 10.30pm. The whole weekend of celebrations will, I am sure, be enjoyed by people up and down the Kingdom, but the beacons especially will be an opportunity for people from every parish in the land to join together, celebrating this wonderful occasion, know that across the country others are doing the same thing.
