Are the Lib Dems running the Vale of White Horse District Council running the risk of being capped by the Government for setting a high council tax. The Department for Communities and Local Government has indicated that it will cap council tax at around 3%. The Lib Dems in Abingdon are proposing an increase of 3.9%, and there is no sign that they are about to change their minds. Of course the Government may back down, but it is a big risk to run.Obviously I want to see Council Tax kept as low as possible, in the current economic climate, households can well do without even small increases in their tax bills, especially at a time when Council services are being cut. There is however a bigger problem with being capped. Not only would the Council be forced to make further budget cuts to acheive the government target, they would also have to shoulder the burden of rebilling everyone. The cost of sending a new council tax bill to every home in the Vale could cost around £60,000.My first hope it that the Lib Dems relent, and propose a lower council tax. If this doesn't happen then I hope the government do not impose a cap, it will cost local people even more in the end. That said, according to this article on the website Public Finance, the Government have already started taking action against three police authorities. Let's hope we're not next!
