Most people who know me think I am quite a cynical person. Yet even I amdisappointed, if not surprised, by the extraordinary cynicism surroundingthe announcement that Samantha Cameron is pregnant. I was delighted forDavid and Samantha when I heard the news, but saddened to see and hearcomments only hours later that it was all a ploy or "terribly convenient".In actual fact I'm sure that Samantha Cameron being four months pregnantduring the most important election campaign to face this country for morethan a decade will be a distinct inconvenience to the Leader of theOpposition. There is never a good time to have a baby, and if David Cameronsucceeds in becoming Prime Minister there may never be a good time for himto do anything ever again. Yes, Samantha Cameron will be part of the election campaign; this cannotrealistically be avoided in the twenty-four hour media age. People want toknow about the personal and family life of the person putting himselfforward to run the country. All wives will be part of the campaign, it isinevitable, even Nick Clegg's wife who gave a television interview to tellus all that she wouldn't be doing lots of television interviews! No doubt there will be a small benefit seen in the polls over the next fewdays, which is likely to be portrayed as a baby bounce. Will it be anelection clincher? Almost certainly not. As we will see over the next sixweeks, the polls will continue to fluctuate, partly due to events, andpartly due to the statistical errors inevitable in all polls.
