People visiting Abingdon’s Abbey Meadow will benefit from a further £230,000 improvements, including new public toilets, changing facilities and an accessible path leading to the popular splash park.

The improvements are in addition to the £320,000 play area, announced by Vale of White Horse District Councils last month, and are part of a £615,000 project to revamp the riverside area and make it more attractive for people to visit throughout the year.

Vale of White Horse District Council has now submitted plans to replace the existing toilets with a brand new facility including four unisex toilets, two of which are accessible, and a separate men’s room.  The new building will also feature an accessible facility for changing babies and young children using the splash park.  The new facility will be surrounded by art panels designed to reflect the local area.

The council will also create a new sloping path to provide easier access for people with disabilities to the splash park, and a fence to provide a physical barrier between splash park users and the river.

It’s expected that the new building and path will be open by summer 2017.

Cllr Charlotte Dickson, Cabinet Member for Leisure at Vale of White Horse District Council, said: “2017 will be a really exciting time for Abbey Meadow. The plans for the new play area received a really positive response when we consulted, while new toilets and changing facilities were two of the most popular improvements that people wanted to see happen and will be a significant improvement to what’s currently available. ”
