Oxford City Council needs to look again at housing sites

Sunday, 9 November, 2014

The Vale of White Horse District Council, along with South Oxfordshire and Cherwell Districts, has submitted a joint response, to a recent assessment of the land Oxford City Council believes it has available for housing within its boundaries. Under the 'Duty to Cooperate' districts outside of Oxford City are likely to be asked to take additional housing that cannot be accomodated withing the City. Oxford has published plans for where it would like this additional housing to go. Whilst the Vale of White Horse District Council continues to cooperate with Oxford and other neighbouring authorities to meet Oxfordshire's need for housing, it is important that every district, including Oxford, does all it can to meet it's own need first, before asking others for help. Overall, the response explains that the Vale does not believe the city council has been as thorough as it needs to be in finding land for housing. Concerns have been raised with the way they have gone about the assessment, as well as urging Oxford to rethink some of their policies that restrict the amount of houses Oxford city can take. The Vale has recommended the city council conducts a review of its Local Plan to take these points into account and properly acknowledge the city's housing pressures identified in the SHMA earlier this year.
