It has lasted 69 days - and for some it probably seemed a lot longer - but the referendum campaign is now over. Polls have closed across the country and votes are about to be counted. If the result is close, and with no previous votes to extrapolate results from, we may have to wait until the very last results are declared tomorrow morning. Neither side of the campaign can claim virtue, the debate has been pretty poor throughout. It has nevertheless been engaging and the turnout appears to be very high. Referenda are unusual in this country, and rightly so. They are only held on major constitutional matters such as our membership of the EU. I hope that when the votes are counted that the British people have voted to leave the failed EU, to regain our sovereignty and to set us on a new course of success and ambition in the global world in which we live. Whatever the result it is however time to unite. I deliberately say this now, before knowing the result. I don't know whether I will be on the winning or the losing side, but I do know that the British people will have had their say, we all must listen. This vote, however close should settle our future. The public as well as politicians must rally round and unite. This issues has divided families, friends and certainly my Party. It is a testament to our democracy that we can all share such difference views in a generally civilised and friendly way, but the real test is how we unite after the result. Britain will continue to be a great nation in or out of the EU. Personally I think we will be stronger out in the world, but I know we have an incredible future whatever tonight's result may hold.
