The result is in! Britain is out! It is now crucial that we all, politicians and public, understand that this result is the defined will of the people and whatever individuals may think, it gives the strongest mandate that any government has had to set a new direction for our country. The result was close as expected, which inevitably means many people will be disappointed. It is important that the next few months are spend building stability and beginning to negotiate and exist from the EU which will continue to receive the Broad support of the British people. The short term impacts on the pound and the markets will be just that, short term. Caused as much by those betting on a Remain result and then seeking to cut their losses. This is democracy in action. Reluctantly I would have accepted defeat if that is what the British people had determined, those on the Leave side must resist undue triumphalism by the same measure. The politicians who have already been on the airwaves castigating the electorate for getting it wrong highlight the arrogance that many feel characterises our political class. The people are the masters, the politicians the servants of those people, not the other way round. Today I believe we have taken a great step forward to restore our democracy, to reclaim our sovereignty and to see us on course for a brighter future in the world. Not as the little Englanders that those campaigning for Remain have unfairly labeled everyone. I want us to continue to trade and travel and live on friendly terms with our European neighbours, but we can do that without an imposed political structure and we can seek to do it with the rest of the world as well, not just a small club of nations that happen to be close to us. A great day for Britain, but there is a huge amount of work still to do and that starts by reuniting the country around the course we have chosen.
