Save the Plough

Saturday, 30 August, 2014

Many people are now aware that the Hanneys faces losing The Plough as a village pub in the very near future. This communication offers an update on the story so far: A date has been set for a meeting in the Village Hall to discuss the possible purchase of the freehold of The Plough from Punch Taverns. The gathering will take place on 8th September at 8pm. The bar will be open. The first item on the agenda will be to measure the depth of interest in buying the business. If there ia a quorum, the second item on the agenda will be to elect a chairman and a small committee. The elected chairman will then run the meeting as he/she sees fit. The meeting is open to all, not just potential purchasers/investors, please attend to show support for the initiative. Ideas and suggestions will be most welcome but please think about what you can contribute, prior to arriving at the venue. The purpose of the meeting is to garner and assess people’s thoughts, therefore, input needs to be clearly thought out beforehand. It is understood that some people may be fazed by public speaking, if you are one of those who would rather not addresss an audience, write down your views beforehand and pass it, on the evening, to Guy Langton or David Bratley who will arrange for your ideas to be put to the meeting. Early suggestions to make the pub a viable business include charging a fair and reasonable rent (on a ‘free house’ basis) and allowing a future tenant a completely free hand in running the business. An initial financial projection has identified a possible return on capital of around 8%, although, this could increase or decrease as more information becomes available. Nothwithstanding, with the Bank of England Base Rate sitting at a half-of-one-percent, an investment appears attractive. Once the pub is gone, it’s gone, act now to save a precious village asset.
