Secretary of State asked to 'compel' Oxford City

Monday, 20 July, 2015

I have today written to Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, Greg Clark, asking him to compel Oxford City to review their Local Plan. On the back of last week's Council motion in the Vale of White Horse I am asking the minister to use his powers to force the City council to look again at their own housing policies before expecting other Councils such as the Vale to take additional housing. View the letter here... The Vale has recognised that it is likely to have to take additional housing from Oxford City under the duty to cooperate, but the amount of housing is not defined. In an attempt to clarify the position I have asked Oxford City to look for ways to accomodate more housing within the City. So far they have refused. The Vale is working with the Oxfordshire Growth Board to find ways to met Oxford's 'unmet need'. At this month's Council meeting it was agreed without opposition to face this challenge head on. A report is expected to go to Cabinet and Scrutiny Committee in August.
