Earlier today Oxfordshire County Council approved an application to relocate the existing pelican crossing on Marcham Road and to introduce a new pelican crossing on Ock Street either side of the Drayton Road junction. This will allow the development of 159 houses on the Drayton Road further adding to the traffic misery for local residents. This has been opposed by residents and all parties on Abingdon Town Council, Vale of White Horse District Council - and was previously opposed by Oxfordshire County Council. Nicola Blackwood has been at the forefront of the campaign against the housing and the new crossings, having previously held a public meeting with the Housing Minister. This morning I spoke at the meeting to reiterate the Vale's objections and underline the work commissioned by the Vale to independently assess the safety of the junctions. The Vale has opposed this development all the way through and right up to the last minute we were standing square with local people opposed to these plans. I have instructed the Vale's solicitors to take legal advice to see if there are any avenues open to us to challenge this decision. What is good enough for the developers is good enough for local people! If we are to put public money behind a challenge we will need to be assured that there is a good chance of success and it will take a little time to get a legal opinion - but if there remains any reasonably chance of success then we will take it.
