Work on Abingdon’s new £320,000 play area started today!

The new site will feature a Grand Abbey climbing area and a river scene featuring a boat to climb on and a mini representative Abingdon Lock to walk along.

There will also be sensory area and play garden, inclusive equipment such as a broad slide, trampoline and roundabout, an informal area for ball games, plus lots of traditional play equipment such as slides, swings, a climbing net and a zip line.

The new play area is expected to be open early summer (weather dependent). While work is being carried out the existing play equipment will be closed to the public.

Later in 2017 new public toilets, changing facilities and an accessible pathway will be installed.

Cllr Charlotte Dickson, Cabinet Member for Leisure at Vale of White Horse District Council, said: “I’m delighted that work is beginning on the new play area and am really looking forward to seeing young children enjoying the new equipment when it opens later this year.  The new equipment will give this much loved area a new lease of life.”

Cllr Matthew Barber, Leader of Vale of White Horse District Council, said: “Last year we provided new play equipment in Faringdon and Wantage, now it’s Abingdon’s turn.  The new area will provide a much better play environment and will help mark Abbey Meadow out as a must visit place for families with young children.

Young children looking to play outdoors while the work is taking place are able to use the play equipment elsewhere in Abingdon, including at:

  • Chaunterell Way (Abingdon Town Council site)
  • Peachcroft
  • Sherwood Avenue
  • Southern Town Park
  • Tilsley Park
