On Saturday 11 June residents in Wantage and Grove will have the chance to find out how the area is working to tackle underage drinking. Members of the Wantage and Grove Community Alcohol Partnership (CAP), including street pastors, local police and Oxfordshire Health NHS Foundation Trust, will on hand between 12noon and 2pm at the Community Fair in the Park at Manor Road Memorial Park, Wantage, to talk to people about what’s been happening and how they can support the efforts to address underage drinking in the area. They will also have information that people can take away about events on offer locally for young people. Since its launch in 2015, following concerns about underage drinking and related anti-social behaviour, the Wantage and Grove CAP has introduced a number of projects to try to help address the problem and offer young people in the area alternative activities to drinking. Actions have included agreeing a commitment from local retailers to support the scheme, organising training events for staff to help ensure they don’t sell alcohol to those who are underage, and offering the free Sports for Streets Initiative every Wednesday evening at Mary Green Park (5pm to 6.30pm) and The Wharf (7pm to 8:30pm) for under 18s. Cllr Sandy Lovatt, Cabinet Member for Vale of White Horse District Council, said: “Underage drinking and the related anti-social behaviour was causing some understandable concern among residents. However, since its launch the Wantage and Grove CAP, working with the local community, has made great strides in tackling the issue. Come along to Manor Road Memorial Park, Wantage on Saturday 11 June between 12noon to 2pm and have a chat with the CAP team to see what they’ve been up to and what activities are available locally for young people.” The Wantage and Grove CAP is made up of representatives from National CAP, King Alfred's Academy, Oxford University Hospitals, South and Vale Community Safety Partnership, Vale of White Horse District Council, Thames Valley Police, Wantage and Grove Street Pastors, Sovereign Housing, local licensees, and The Sport for Streets Initiative.
